Discover

We conducted a total of 20 in-person interviews to get an understanding of people’s attitudes towards online and hybrid events which was supplemented by an online questionnaire.

We made it a priority to find people that fall within the following categories:

  • Individuals who engage in charitable activities.

  • Anyone who has attended online and/or hybrid events.

Interviews

After we collected the results from the interviews and the questionnaire we used affinity mapping to group the data. This allowed us to extract key insights by identifying recurring themes and responses.

Define

After evaluating the data we created a persona called April who embodies an individual who is apprehensive about hybrid events but is open to attending as she wants to find out more about the charity but lives far away.

User Persona

“I want to find a charity where I can volunteer my skills and connect with other likeminded individuals.”

Background

April is an architect living in Swansea, Wales. She loves to socialise and is passionate about volunteering. Since the Covid-19 pandemic April has been working from home and is familiar with online meetings and conferences.

Goals

  • Grow her network.

  • Volunteer her architectural skills.

  • Be more charitable.

Pain Points

  • Often switches off her camera during online meetings due to laggy internet connection.

  • Struggles to make personal connections online.

Sees

  • Poverty in her community.

  • Fundraising campaigns.

  • Charity success stories.

Empathy Map

Thinks

  • Can I do more to help?

  • How can I volunteer my skills?

  • Where can I find likeminded people?

Does

  • Researches architecture charities.

  • Helps those in need.

  • Joins online communities.

Feels

  • Optimistic.

  • Frustrated.

  • Unsatisfied

April needs a way to feel connected at an online charity event as she has found previous online meetings and events to be awkward, disorganized and unsocial. By attending this AzuKo’s charity event, April would like to see if she is a good fit for the charity as she is looking to volunteer her skills.

Problem Statement

We believe that by making the event more interactive and engaging for all attendees, April will feel more connected to the charity and its cause. We will know this to be true when we see April has pledged to donate or volunteer for the charity.

Sketches

Before focusing on aesthetics, we constructed grey scale wireframes to evaluate the effectiveness of our designs. Our goal was to determine if users found the design intuitive and if their pain points were being addressed.

We particularly wanted to focus on interactivity as this was one of our user’s main concerns.

Low Fidelity Wireframes

Once the wireframes were complete we carried out usability testing with participants to understand how individuals would interact with the product and see if we could discover any pain points.

From these tests we discovered that, as we decided to expand on AzuKo’s existing website, users found the ‘website within a website’ structure confusing. Subsequently, this made navigating through the different pages difficult for them.

Usability testing

Based on the insights we gained from the usability tests we decided to change the format of the product so that it would become a standalone website for the 10 year anniversary event. By doing so, navigating the product will become seamless as users will be able to easily identify each page on the menu bar.
